1000 Denier Nylon
One Planet packs use 1000 Denier Nylon for its high strength and durability.
On canvas packs, it provides an extra layer of reinforcing over the canvas on the base of the pack.
The Travel pack range, the Frog and Toad and Limpet are all made completely from this light and durable fabric.
This fabric is triple coated with a three pass process. This gives good water resistance and also makes for excellent yarn stability in the fabric.
Waterloc Canvas
Waterloc Canvas was developed for One Planet specifically for use on our backpacks. Waterloc Canvas is woven from yarn that uses a polyester fibre core for strength and a cotton wrap for waterproofing and durability.
Waterloc Canvas has greater strength than equivalent weight polyester and cotton blended canvas.
The Grid pattern maintains a smooth surface profile for better abrasion resistance, whilst the fabric is impregnated with a compound that is a blend of hydrophobic and rot inhibiting agents to ensure waterproofing and longevity. All Waterloc Canvas has the underside coloured a light grey so when the pack is constructed the interior of the pack is lighter and brighter making it easier to locate items low in the pack.
Canvas Binding
Most Canvas pack manufacturers use a light nylon binding tape. Most nylon binding tapes are dyed using wetting agents to allow the dyes to penetrate deep into the binding. Residue wetting agents can create a capillary action, wicking water throughout the pack.
In 1992 One Planet (then Aiking) developed a process that incorporated the same waterproofing properties found in Waterloc fabric for pack construction. With specially built (in Australia) sewing machines, we bind all the main internal seams of Waterloc Grid Canvas packs with a 4 fold 8oz canvas binding.
Thread and needles
All seams are twin-stitched with a large polyester core spun cotton wrapped thread. This process uses a small needle. This means they leave a smaller hole that equates to even better waterproofing. The problem is that they break. So we developed special needle guides to stabilise the needle, alleviating needle damage making the process consistent and even.
The binding process is very expensive but it works, making One Planet Waterloc Grid packs the most waterproof on the market.
